Formative vs Performance Task

performance task is any learning activity or assessment that asks students to perform to demonstrate their knowledge, understanding and proficiency. (https://blog.performancetask.com/what-is-a-performance-task-part-1-9fa0d99ead3b)

Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. (https://www.edglossary.org/formative-assessment/)

Formative tasks are good for seeing growth over time while performance tasks (or assessments) are good for assessing the mastery of the unit or tasks.

An example of a formative assessment is  student and teacher discussions, journals and homework.
An example of a performance task is tests such as teacher created or multiple choice and capstone projects.

  1. This subject is still tough for me. While i will still hold that a final exam is a performance task, in our class all tests/quizzes are classified as formative tasks. One example from class i believe passed as a Performance task was a current event, in which a student must look at today's news/events and draw a parallel between the past and present. this can be furtnered as a performance by asking the student to present their current event to the class in a do or die assignment.

    1. A formative assessment is done ON THE SPOT, meaning that you can change instruction on a dime. If they aren't getting it, you can stop, do something else, and assess again. A final exam is a test. A performance is doing what it is you want them to be able to do with what you taught. You can take a test on the causes of the American Revolution but a performance task might be to write a play, poem, song, or short story on the causes of the AR. Hope this helps.

  2. The links were helpful yet this is definitely the Art and Science of Teaching:
    Performance task and Formative Assessment.
Performance Task that allows the student to "do" or "demonstrate" skills or competencies by performing or producing something.
Example: If a Teacher wanted to know if a student could conduct a science experiment, the Teacher would have the student "do" the experiment.

Formative Assessment is more diagnostic, it is used to monitor students learning style and
    ability.
Formative Assessment provides ongoing feedback and allows educators to improve and adjust their teaching methods.
Students can improve their learning through formative assessments.
