5 ways to teach

Vocabulary

1. SONGS! Students LOVE songs and it is a great way to learn new words (and how to spell them!).

2. Word Wheel-- you can make your own out of card stock, a brad and a paper clip. Have different things written on the wheel such as Act it out, Define it, Rhyme Time, Draw it, Use it in a sentence.

3. BINGO! A great way to introduce or even a refresher of words is by playing games. Bingo is always a fun game and motivational if students get a prize (like candy or a little trinket).

4.  Picture dictionary is another way to teach vocabulary.

5. Another way, which would be fun would have them write a book using as many vocabulary words as they can. Peers will edit the book and then you can have them professionally bound (my school has a spiral binder & laminate). I had this done when I was in grade school and my mom STILL has the book. We also have my husbands 'Book of Poems' and its fun to see what we wrote when we were younger.

  1. Music is a phenomenal idea! Who doesn't remember a song easier than non-music?! I know I an hear a song just a couple times and have the entire thing memorized! I think bingo is such a great one! I have seen it used many many times for vocabulary as well as other subjects and the students just love it and seem to grasps it so easily! All great ideas for vocabulary! I love your examples!

  3. Music is a great way to help students remember vocabulary. I know when I listen to songs with my daughter I can remember every lyric after two times. I love bingo and you can play bingo in any subject area which makes it one of those3 games that I plan to put in my tool box for my future class. However, I have not see teacher use it much, which makes me sad. Great Post!
